Why I Love The UKYA Blogger Awards (UKYABA)! Inc. links to ALL nominees!

A little context – The UKYA Blogger Awards is a set of yearly awards given to UK based book bloggers in 10 different categories, decided by bloggers, publishers and authors. The categories are….

  • Champion Teen Blogger – aged 13-19 (Decided by Publishers and Authors)
  • Champion Adult Blogger – aged 20+ (Decided by Publishers and Authors)
  • Champion of Diversity (Decided by Publishers and Authors)
  • Champion Vlogger (Decided by Publishers and Authors)
  • Champion of Social Media (Decided by Publishers and Authors)
  • Marvellous Blogger (Decided by Bloggers)
  • Best Newcomer – Blogging for 0-2 years (Decided by the Industry and Bloggers)
  • Best Growing Blog – Blogging for 2-4 years (Decided by the Industry & Bloggers)
  • Best Established Blogger – Blogging for 4+ years (Decided by the Industry & Bloggers)
  • Best Content and Design – (Decided by the Industry and Bloggers)

(more information on the UKYABA website here)

On the 17th January, the longlist for each of these categories was announced (here), and the shortlist announced on the 19th January (here) for 2018.

The winners are then announced at an awards ceremony on the 14th April 2018 at the end of YA Shot (more information here).

However, for me, what makes these awards special is that they celebrate everything the UKYA community stands for….

There are three different categories depending on how long you’ve been blogging, 0-2 years, 2-4 years and 4+ years. New blogs are given just as much recognition as older, more established blogs, even if their audiences are smaller. Numbers are not the defining factor for these awards and these awards recognise the hard work and passion that many bloggers put into their blog. Every voice matters in the UKYA community and giving new bloggers recognition encourages more and more people to blog and join the UKYA community so we can share the love for books we all have.

Of course there is still a long way to go in the book industry in terms of diversity, not only for characters in books, but also the authors, agents and publishers who get these books out into the world. Recognising these bloggers who push for more diversity is a way of thanking them for publicising and sharing the need there is to create a more diverse and inclusive book community. Having diversity is important in the UKYA community so everyone can grow up and read a book, with a character or author they can relate to, knowing their ‘minority’ status is represented in the world. These bloggers are really advocating for a change in the book industry and it’s fantastic that they can get the recognition they deserve, as they are paving the way for a more diverse, inclusive UKYA future.

Having two different categories for the age of a blogger is a fantastic idea. Having an ‘adult’ category recognises that YA books are not just for ‘young adults’ as such, but can be read and enjoyed by anyone of any age. Many of these adults will have jobs, some in the book industry and some not, yet the YA community brings all of these different people with different backgrounds together and unite them in the one thing we all have in common – a love for YA books. Equally, having a ‘teenage’ blogger award is great and recognises that even though ‘adult’ bloggers often have the luxury of travelling to various book events across the country which many teens can’t do, teen voices should not be overshadowed. Growing up and managing the stress of school and college is bad enough, but managing a successful blog ON TOP OF THAT is incredible and an amazing achievement. Your hard work and passion is something that should be congratulated more often!

Having categories which are exclusively decided by the book industry, exclusively by bloggers, and a mix of the two, really represents how great the UKYA community. Very few other communities have such a great relationship with those who run it (think the film industry for example). Recognising bloggers in itself is incredible, but letting them have a say in the outcome shows truly how important bloggers are in the book community. Book bloggers work for free, keep to a tight schedule and manage the stress of general life alongside, simply because they love what they do. Bloggers are an important part of the book industry, and whether they have been nominated for these blog awards or not, are an essential asset to the book industry. It’s fantastic this is celebrated.

Awards like this make me realise how much I truly love the YA community. What we have as a community is fantastic and I would never ever change that. Recognising bloggers who work incredibly hard is so important and whether you’ve been nominated or not, doesn’t take away the work and passion you have for the UKYA community. Thank you to the UKYA blogger awards for making me remember and appreciate how great you all are ❤
