My TBR for #YALCathon

Hello everyone! This weekend (between Friday 3rd August at 5pm GMT to Sunday 5th August 11.59pm GMT), Hollie and Kate are holding a readathon with the aim to read as much as we can, particularly books which we have accumulated from YALC (Young Adult Literature Convention). Using the #YALCathon hashtag, you’ll be able to follow everyone’s progress on various social medias.

And here are links to their Twitter and Blogs:

Surprisingly, I only picked up 7 books at YALC which is no where near as many as I was expecting. Therefore, my aim is to try to read as much as I can (not necessarily YALC focused).

Sadly, I’m 5 books behind schedule for what I was hoping to read this year (wahhhhh) so my aim is to try and narrow this figure down. Maybe to get back on target, who knows.

So here are 3 books I’m hoping to finish this weekend!

Gemma, Lou, Issey, Liane and Paige are determined to make the most of this second year at uni. They want to have fun, but they want to focus on work. There’s no time for relationships. Except with each other. And even that’s not guaranteed. Gemma and Lou have always been close, but there’s tension between Issey and Liane, and none of them even knows Paige all that well.

But when Gemma finds a magazine article with a list of men they should date before they’re 21 (someone who’s been on telly? Check; someone who’s got tatoos? Check;) they vow to complete the list before finishing university and set about it with a lot more enthusiasm than they do their studies … but will any of them end up with a full house? And when a secret from their first year comes out, it looks as if some of them might not be completing university, never mind the list …

Technically I kind of picked this up at YALC because I saw Keris on the panel for diversity and the premise behind My Heart Goes Bang sounded like something I’d really enjoy, so I bought an e-version on my kindle. I’m just under a quarter of the way through this before the readathon but I’m super excited to finish it because I’m really intrigued so far. It’s got amazing reviews so far so I have a feeling I will not be disappointed by this book!

Gracie Dart is your classically studious, responsible, clearheaded, career focussed girl. The sort of girl whose exam revision time table is fully colour coded and always triple checked. But now GCSEs are behind her – and suddenly Gracie starts feeling WHAT IS THE POINT? And then Gracie accidentally thinks she is dying of some terminal illness (the perils of believing all you read on Google). One super embarrassing A+E visit later (no, Gracie, you are not dying of some fatal skin disease, you’ve simply over done it on the fake bake lotion) Gracie starts to rethink her life. And when Gracie decides to do something, just like her fully colour coded revision time table, Gracie does nothing in half measures. Gracie Dart is about to live it large…

This book I did manage to grab at YALC as an ARC from a Hot Key Books competition. This book, as stated on the cover, is “for fans of Geek Girl” which has me completely intrigued and hooked already. I love the Geek Girl series by Holly Smale and so I have high hopes for this book. I’m really hope that Gracie is just as loveable as Harriet Manners and that any books that follow this series are loved just as much as this one.

Poor Noah Grimes! His father disappeared years ago, his mother’s Beyonce tribute act is an unacceptable embarrassment, and his beloved gran is no longer herself. He only has one friend, Harry, and school is…Well, it’s pure HELL. Why can’t Noah be normal, like everyone else at school? Maybe if he struck up a romantic relationship with someone – maybe Sophie, who is perfect and lovely – he’d be seen in a different light? But Noah’s plans are derailed when Harry kisses him at a party. That’s when things go from bad to utter chaos.

So I have been meaning to read this book for AGES. And when I say AGES, I mean I preordered this book over a year ago and here we are….still unread. Even though this book has fairly mixed reviews, I’m really hoping that this is going to be a fantastic read due to the LGBTQ+ rep in this book which is so needed in the UKYA community. It seems like a lighthearted read too which will be great to get back into reading as I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump recently.

Anyway, that’s all the books I’m hoping to finish this weekend. Unfortunately I have work as well which means I won’t be able to read as much as I would have liked. I’ve been on a bit of a reading slump recently so I’m looking forward to getting back into reading and this is a great opportunity for me to do so.

A huge thank you again to Hollie and Kate for organising this readathon. I hope you can join us!
